Normally I would steer clear of teaching such a clichéd tune but, if you can get past the overfamiliarity, it’s still a great song, and a great way to learn about picking out separate notes in chords.
What we’re talking about here is broken chords or, to use the posh music theory term, arpeggios. We hold down a chord shape and pick the notes one at a time, in a particular pattern. It’s a great alternative to strumming, and is used in many songs.
This version is based on The Animal’s recording, though we’re not quite using the same picking pattern. In the sheet music, I’ve given you the full arrangement which includes an instrumental passage after each verse which you can try adding in (I don’t go into this in the video).
