Girl Afraid by The Smiths

10th April 2021 by Adrian Woodward

Time for another Smiths lesson, kids. Someone in the YouTube comments described this as the Mount Everest of Johnny Marr guitar parts which I think is about right. Certainly very challenging, but very satisfying to play once you get the hang of it.

Recording Info

Here’s some fantastic info on the recording of this track from producer Martin Hayles who recently left this great comment on YouTube. The mystery of the lead guitar phaser sound is solved. Also a brilliant water droplet sound trick –

Highlighted commentMARTIN HAYLES1 day agoVery Nice Lesson and yes Malcolm main guitar part was played using a mutron Bi-Phase pedal. I call it a pedal, but it was more like a small arp synth with patch cards that were placed on top of the controls to get preset sounds. It only has a mono output so the main signal was panned Left and a 1/16 delay of that sound was panned Right. The bass sound was indeed a Roland TB 303. The water droplet noises were created with Edwyn tapping his jackplug into his amp on a metal doorstop on the studio floor which was then flanged. Edwyns amp was a Fender Twin with reverb on. The drums on the track are actual drum loops created from Zeke playing for a couple of hours then cut up on a multitrack to create the song. If you want any more info let me know. Martin Hayles (Producer)
