Rip It Up by Orange Juice

20th February 2021 by Adrian Woodward

In this video I’m taking a look a the Orange Juice Classic.

Recording Info

Here’s some fantastic info on the recording of this track from producer Martin Hayles who recently left this great comment on YouTube. The mystery of the lead guitar phaser sound is solved. Also a brilliant water droplet sound trick –

Highlighted commentMARTIN HAYLES1 day agoVery Nice Lesson and yes Malcolm main guitar part was played using a mutron Bi-Phase pedal. I call it a pedal, but it was more like a small arp synth with patch cards that were placed on top of the controls to get preset sounds. It only has a mono output so the main signal was panned Left and a 1/16 delay of that sound was panned Right. The bass sound was indeed a Roland TB 303. The water droplet noises were created with Edwyn tapping his jackplug into his amp on a metal doorstop on the studio floor which was then flanged. Edwyns amp was a Fender Twin with reverb on. The drums on the track are actual drum loops created from Zeke playing for a couple of hours then cut up on a multitrack to create the song. If you want any more info let me know. Martin Hayles (Producer)

Drive My Car by The Beatles

1st May 2020 by Adrian Woodward

A Beatles’ classic. Includes one of Paul McCartney’s finest solos, second only perhaps to Taxman.

Making Plans For Nigel by XTC

30th November 2018 by Adrian Woodward

In this lesson I’m looking at XTC’s glorious 1979 single, Making Plans for Nigel. Here’s what the original sounds like (with some great vintage Top of the Pops footage):

Hanging On The Telephone by The Nerves/Blondie

A classic bit of 70s power pop. Originally by LA band The Nerves, but made famous by Blondie. Check out the original recordings:

And here’s the lesson video.

Shake Some Action by Flamin’ Groovies

21st April 2018 by Adrian Woodward

If you don’t know the song, check out the original recording:

Good, huh? Now learn to play it. Plenty of tasty rhythm guitar and a nice, easy-ish solo to boot.

Music/tab

For a nice, downloadable PDF of all the parts click here.

Intro

The intro looks like this. Experiment with a bit of  palm muting for the first section, and remember that 8th note delay.

Verse/Pre-chorus

This is the basic gist of what’s going on. On the recording there seem to be several different layers of guitar all doing slightly different variations on this part. so you don’t need to be too fussy about the details here.

Chorus

The choruses are pretty much the same as the intro, with the addition of some simple rhythm chords underneath.

Solo

And finally, here’s the solo. There are a couple of places where it’s impossible to hear exactly what’s going on, but I think this is pretty close. At the end of the solo, just go back into the same rhythm part found in the intro and at the end of the chorus.
